We intend to make this a great page for anyone in the #HamOnt area interested in sustainable practices often seen on homesteads; green energy, harvest gardens, conservation, etc, by blogging about the process of turning a 100 year old home in Hamilton’s East End into a sustainable homestead for the 21st century – saving money, eating good food, and positively contributing to our natural environment.
FYI Our site is dedicated to sourcing, sharing, and adding to conversations about homesteading in any urban setting – but contains resources specific to Hamilton, Ontario.
“Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. An industrialized city in the Golden Horseshoe at the west end of Lake Ontario, Hamilton has a population of 536,917…Since 1981, the metropolitan area has been listed as the ninth largest in Canada and the third largest in Ontario.” Thanks Wikipedia!
Our bylaws, building codes, and weather will be different from where you might be – but if you’re using this site as a reference for your own urban homesteading initiative you should know we’re in USDA hardiness zone 5, and live in a pretty typical city, with a pretty typical (size) home & garden.
